We achieve this through partnerships, networking with other libraries, and providing staff continuing education. We stay connected to the community and evolve our materials and services as needs change. MCDL’s Board serves as the community’s voice. I’m thankful for the trustees’ gift of time, talent, and service. In her final year on the board, President Maria Griffiths led our trustees with an emphasis on community engagement and commitment to inclusion, which is evident in the priorities of the strategic plan. Listening to the community’s voice continued with a survey of residents. Areas that received high levels of satisfaction included variety of materials in the collection, research assistance, check out speed, quiet environment, personalized instruction, and staff response to individual needs. Areas for potential improvement included library cleanliness, condition of equipment, and quick reference services. In overall satisfaction, 88% of respondents would recommend MCDL to a friend or family member and 86% stated their needs are met through library services. This data-driven survey was conducted at the start of the strategic plan and will be repeated at the conclusion to measure growth. We’re grateful to everyone who participated in the survey. We value your feedback and will use it for continued improvement. Thank you to our community partners, trustees, Friends of the Library, volunteers, staff, and everyone who supports and uses the library. We look forward to a productive 2024. General Operating Fund MCDL Ends 2023 Debt-Free Medina County tax-payers will see a reduction in their 2024 tax bill as MCDL’s 2003, $42.3 million tax bond issue was paid off December 2023. This means county taxpayers will support their six library locations and Outreach Services at the lowest tax rates since 2002. The bond funded new construction and major remodeling/expansion of all the county libraries between 2005 and 2008. Thanks to a refinancing in 2012, the library saved $2.4 million in interest costs on the bond, a savings that was passed on to tax payers. Now MCDL only has a 1.5 mil operating levy, which collects at less than $40 a year for every $100,000 of assessed property value. Supporting Our County 9,944 snacks were provided to kids at MCDL locations in partnership with Feeding Medina County. 1,033 knitted and crocheted items were collected for Warm Up Medina County and given to local charities such as Job & Family Services, Salvation Army, Hospice of the Western Reserve, and more. 1,000 Kindergarten Kits were distributed to families preparing their children for school. 900 Caregiver Kits were distributed to new parents/ caregivers of babies and include materials to support early childhood development. Funded in part by Medina Sunrise Rotary and Ohio Early Intervention. Thank you for your generosity! Congratulations to Jenna Elswick, Human Resources Manager, and Dan Holahan, Lodi Library Manager, graduates of 2023 Leadership Medina County programs. Library Director, Julianne Bedel, graduated from Leadership Ohio. Staff Honors

Hearing Loop Medina Library is now equipped with Hearing Loops. Look for the blue Hearing Loop signs in Community Rooms A and B, the Medina Room, and the Customer Service and Reference Desks. Hearing Loop technology sends the speaker’s voice from a microphone directly to hearing assistive devices, eliminating all ambient noise. A Hearing Loop works directly with cochlear implants and hearing aids equipped with a T-coil. About 70 percent of all hearing aids contain this technology. You may need to access the Loop via the programming button or by the switch on your device. If you have never activated the T-coil in your device it is recommended you consult with your audiologist before using the Loop. For those who do not have a personal hearing device, Loop receivers are available at the Customer Service Desk. Learn more about Hearing Loops at mcdl.info/HearingLoop. To reserve a meeting room that is Hearing Loop equipped visit mcdl.info/MeetingRoom. Medina Library’s Hearing Loop is made possible through a $20,000 Libraries Transforming Communities grant from the American Library Association. Welcome to the Board of Trustees Ann Marie Flannery has lived in Hinckley Township for 19 Years. She and her husband Tom have four children ages 16-24. Ann Marie is an RN, who works as the Nursing Quality Program Manager and Magnet Program Coordinator at Cleveland Clinic Medina hospital. A lifelong passion for the library at all phases of life fostered a desire to become more involved with the library. 8 MCDL News & Notes Citizenship Corner Inspired by Patron Brunswick Library staff are always eager to help. Recently that desire lead to offering a new service and section in the library. Sammy has attended the library’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes for years. Recently, she decided to begin the process of earning her U.S. citizenship. Staff curated a collection of books and study guides for Sammy, then implemented a federal program that helps establish Citizenship Corners in communities. Patrons can now borrow citizenship study kits which include flash cards, practice tests, and more and can borrow books, print naturalization forms, and access online resources. Learn more about the World Language Collection, including requesting materials in various languages, bilingual books, ESOL services, and citizenship resources at mcdl.info/WorldLanguage. Sammy S. (pictured) earned her U.S. Citizenship in 2023 and was the inspiration for the Citizenship Corner. I am incredibly grateful for the programming, materials, and activities that drew me in at a young age and helped me become a lifelong learner. Serving on the board allows me to help ensure library services continue to be a foundational resource in our community for all. – Ann Marie
