Director’s Notes by Julianne Bedel Many thanks to all the families who participated in the 2023 Summer Reading Game. There were a combined 8,101 teens and children who played the games. Of those, 3,422 children completed the game and took home a book of their choice as the final prize. An additional 242 children finished the game a second time, just because they loved it so much! I’d like to express sincere gratitude to the volunteers and community partners who support this program. Special thanks to the Friends of MCDL for their outstanding financial contribution, made possible by everyone who has shopped a book sale or participated in a fundraiser. Providing personal ownership of new books is important in helping children form lifelong reading habits. Earlier this fall, several hundred community members responded to our survey, which was conducted by a consulting firm specializing in public libraries. Library services which held high priority overall included outreach programs, technology training, online and virtual services, and maintaining safe and attractive facilities. When asked if they would recommend the library to a friend or family member, 88% responded in the affirmative. In response to the statement “the library plays an important role in the quality of life in our community,” 92% agreed. We will use the survey feedback, along with our current Strategic Plan, to guide our work over the next several years. Thank you to all who participated to give us a more concrete understanding of what you value in your public library and where opportunities for growth exist.
